Because it affects all of us, a lot of research has been done on reducing cravings. What has been found is that individuals that have intense cravings report having vivid images of the food they are craving. In fact, it takes so much brain power that they are unable to complete basic cognitive functions like recalling events or solving math problems. But, it can work in the opposite direction as well. If we direct our brain power toward something productive, cravings may decrease.
So what can we take from this? When cravings hit, wait them out. Channel your energy into something productive. I don't believe we can't ever give into cravings, just not too often. And, in order to help prevent cravings to begin with, be sure you are eating consistent, well-balanced meals. This will help to keep blood sugar levels steady and you will notice less cravings and less preoccupation with food.
What do you do to reduce cravings? How do you respond to cravings once they hit?

Such good timing on this post. I was married 9 months ago. Living single I managed cravings by not keeping sweets in the house; my husband loves to bake all things sweet (and breads). I hadn't been able to find a way to manage my cravings and for several months have been absolutely out of control. I'm sure not just the availability of these foods, but the emotion of life change played into it too.
Two weeks ago I asked for my husband's support in keeping sweets out of the house for two weeks so I could break the taste. (at least that's what I typically seem to need in order to find some level of moderation). He was wonderful in helping me out.
I had one particularly tough day the first week, but still succeeded. I did indulge in 2 cookies at the end of the second week. I was a little disappointed that I didn't abstain til the end, but was also glad that I did not feel out of control (i.e. did not want to over indulge).
I am now considering whether to extend the "fast" for another two weeks to reinforce the the taste for more healthy foods. I use to enjoy a desire for veggies over sweets and can't wait to have that balance back.
